What’s happening in the espresso service world?

The Espresso Service Directory serves multiple purposes: it connects equipment shoppers with local sources for new espresso machines, helps them find service companies for repairs and maintenance, and supports industry professionals and retailers in guiding their customers to qualified local service providers.

Opportunities and Obstacles in the Espresso Service Market

Espresso Service Directory discovers closures or business changes when we send a newsletter or email—like this one—and it bounces back. This is our easiest way to identify companies that may have closed so we can keep the Directory accurate and up to date, ensuring it remains a reliable resource for industry professionals. You can help by updating your profile whenever it’s convenient.

In 2024, the Directory added 26 new profiles but sadly removed 16 service companies due to closures. This shows that while the market is attractive enough to draw new entrants, high turnover continues to expose serious barriers to sustainability.

More espresso machines than ever are appearing in cafés, restaurants, and offices, creating opportunities for new providers. Yet the closure of 16 companies despite strong demand highlights the challenges of surviving in this industry. The steep learning curve—combined with technical complexity, parts inventory costs, and the need to build trust with customers—forces many out quickly.

Many begin as solo operators offering below-market rates, which can lead to burnout and operational blind spots—such as lacking admin support, a sales pipeline, or a structured maintenance program. Because the industry is not certified, lower prices drive rates down further, forcing service companies to cut corners, impacting established jobs and making it difficult to sustain quality service. As a result, the industry remains fragmented and vulnerable.

While the net growth signals demand, the closures reveal a clear need for better support, training, and sustainable business practices. This is where networks like the Espresso Service Network can make a difference—by sharing resources, building sales pipelines, offering business training, and encouraging retainer programs that keep both customers and service companies stable.

From Independents to Large Firms: Our Inclusion Policy

The Espresso Service Directory lists companies that publicly state they work on commercial espresso equipment. We also require each company to be registered with its state or local agency, although this can be difficult to monitor since licensing typically expires annually. Service companies can also indicate whether they carry General Liability Insurance.

In the Directory, you’ll see both large companies and small independent providers listed side by side. While some view the inclusion of larger or private equity–owned entities as inappropriate for the niche Specialty Coffee market, the reality is that many equipment owners struggle to find qualified, responsive technicians in their area. For now, our priority is to provide equipment owners with as many viable options as possible.

Why Reviews Matter More Than Rules

We do not vet service companies in the traditional sense because commercial espresso service is not a licensed industry. Opinions on what defines quality service vary widely among equipment manufacturers, roasters, and owners. Technical skill and coffee knowledge are not always the deciding factors—some customers prioritize low pricing and no service contracts, while others value on-demand availability or a friendly technician above all.

Meeting the diverse expectations of the coffee community can be challenging, and many technicians’ face frustration trying to satisfy everyone. For this reason, we leave the vetting process to the coffee community itself through our review system.

Final Note

The Espresso Service Directory is only as strong as the people in it. Your updates, reviews, and participation help keep it accurate, useful, and trusted across the industry.

  1. Update your profile if your contact info changes.
  2. Leave reviews to guide other coffee professionals.

Together, we can strengthen the espresso service community, support sustainable businesses, and keep great coffee flowing everywhere.
